A-B Wilderness Gateway Community Visitor Guide
The ABWF strives to be a good steward of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, but it is just as important for us to be good stewards of the communities surrounding the wilderness too. Local businesses in our gateway communities can help you make the most of your wilderness experience, whether you need
- last minute supplies before hitting the trail,
- a juicy burger and cold beverage to celebrate your return,
- a local guide to help show the way,
- a special gift to share the memories,
- or other local attractions to visit while you are here
Please support the local businesses that support wilderness conservation.

Outdoor Gear and Recreation
Sylvan Peak Mountain Shop is located in the heart of downtown Red Lodge, Montana. They have been in business for 29 years, providing quality outdoor gear and clothing. Nestled at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains, they serve the fine people of South-Central Montana and surrounding areas!
Our origins start in Red Lodge, Montana, at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains. A backdrop that not only served as inspiration for our products, but as testing ground for our legendary chairs. Since 1987 we’ve working to produce lasting outdoor products with a singular focus – to perfect “just sit there” no matter what terrain “there” might include.
Beartooth Mountain Guides has developed the listed activities, trips and guided climbs to respond to a variety of needs based on the public’s interest in adventure sports and outdoor pursuits. In 2002 we were awarded a permit by the Beartooth Ranger District to provide instruction and guidance for a variety of mountain activities that travel throughout the Beartooth Range.
Beartooth Recreational Trails Association
The Beartooth Recreational Trails Association (BRTA) was organized in 2002 to: 1) continue operations of the Red Lodge Nordic Center (RLNC); 2) promote non-motorized trails in Red Lodge and along the Beartooth Front.
They work with the Forest Service, the City of Red Lodge, Carbon County, private land owners and other organizations to create and maintain trails. They have attracted many supporters and are an official 501(c)3 non-profit. They rely on your donations, and they are tax deductible.
Zephyr was created because they love active travel and wanted to bring this passion to others. They only run about 15 public tours per year, which allows us to handpick locations from around the world we think will be most appealing to our travelers. They recognize this means your preferred tour location or date might not be available, which is why they also have a very strong private tour option with low minimum numbers.
They are a small but mighty team that is here to help guide you on your own extraordinary adventure!
Food & Beverage
Red Lodge Pizza Co. & Natali’s Front Bar
Red Lodge Pizza Co. started with a crazy idea from a couple of newlywed 30 year olds back in 1996, can we make hand-tossed pizza with made-from-scratch dough and fresh ingredients for our community to eat and love? So, the newly married Tom and Eliza Kuntz bought this historic building you’re sitting in today, mixed the made-from-scratch dough, hand tossed it into pizza crusts, topped them with fresh ingredients, cooked them on pizza stones, and opened the doors of the newly established Red Lodge Pizza Co… …and the people loved it, and they keep coming back!
On the other side of the front counter at Pizza Co. exists and oasis of locally brewed micro brew beer on tap. They keep up to 17 beers fresh and rotated through our tap selection yearly. Beer is what we’re known for, come sit with us and have a cold one!
Sam’s Tap Room & Kitchen is a public bar and restaurant attached to Red Lodge Ales Brewing Company. Open every day from 11 AM—9 PM, Sam’s offers casual dining in a local and friendly atmosphere. The flavors are bold, salads are fresh, soups are hearty and sandwiches are BIG—to match the flavor and philosophy of Sam’s beer. We hope you agree.
Stop by and enjoy a pint on our outdoor patio, join the friendly bartenders inside for a sampling tray or get cozy and relax with complimentary wifi by the fire place.
The Carbon County Steakhouse is one of the most well known and loved steakhouses in Montana and Wyoming. Their unique modern-western ambience is a mix of the 1800’s cowboy cattle drives and contemporary fine-dining, featuring world-class wines, and diet friendly cuisines. They serve humanely raised and locally-sourced meats from Gallagher’s Natural Beef & Produce, a family owned and operated ranch in Clark, Wyoming 30 miles from our restaurant.

Lodging
At Silver Gate Lodging you should expect to find nature staring you in the face instead of your phone screen. We are happy to be ‘mostly’ off the grid, and yes, we do realize that for some that is almost impossible. For those guests, we do have satellite internet service that is working most of the time in our common area, but no internet in our cabins. And the download speed is probably much slower than what you’re used to getting.
Our story started with our founder Henry Finkbeiner, a nature lover looking for a place to unplug, relax and get away from it all. Henry was introduced to the wonders of national parks by his grandfather who just happened to take him through Silver Gate via the Beartooth pass on their way to Yellowstone National Park. Something about Silver Gate stuck with him.
