Volunteer Projects
Volunteers are at the heart of how ABWF shows up for the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and the communities that surround it. From educating hikers as Trail Ambassadors, to pulling weeds at local trailheads, to swinging pulaskis and sharing meals around the campfire during summer trail maintenance projects, volunteers add power and passion to all we do.

Trail Projects
Our wilderness trail projects are where stewardship and adventure collide. Each summer season we host six or more work trips into the backcountry to maintain trails, restore habitats, or collect data. These range from single day events, through a long weekend to week-long. Care to join us?

Citizen Science
Our two citizen science programs provide opportunities for volunteers to contribute to our growing body of knowledge about how people interact with the wilderness, and what resources are available to help them do so in a safe and responsible way. Our expanded Solitude Monitoring program addresses significant capacity issues following recent cuts in USFS funding and staff.

Trail Ambassadors
Across the country, wilderness areas are receiving more visitation. Our trained Trail Ambassadors provide hikers with information and tools they need to care for their surrounding environment, and remind even experienced backcountry users of practices that are too often overlooked.

Community Events
Throughout the year, we host a variety of volunteer opportunities and events around the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and surrounding communities. From weed-pulls to clean-up days, and skills demos to wilderness lectures, there is something for everyone. Bring a friend or make one!
